Lisbon, Portugal – No matter where you go in the world, you can usually catch a decent street performance. As I waited for a bus to tour the city of Lisbon, I felt fortunate to have the distraction of this not so common performance. So the man with the shock of brown curls came quietly and sat on the ground by the crowded shops – generally a great strategy for attracting tourists with change. He then pulled out a strange cloth guitar case that held two guitars in it. I started to look around expectant of a partner to show up, but no one came. I began to wonder, what exactly is he going to do with both guitars? Will he play one with his hands and one with his feet? Well that’ll get a lot of attention!

And here it is folks…drum roll please….

Duh duh duh duh dum dum….

The secret is out! Wait, what?

Attention, he did get, my friends. And confusion and weird looks and even a pebble or something tossed at the guitar to try to throw it off balance. Not sure this show should be on any road…

New York, New York – This happens in many parts of the world: PETA freaks people protesting outside of fur stores. Now, I’m not about fur either, but I’m just thinking…shouldn’t they stand outside of Wolfgang’s Streakhouse or perhaps they could go straight to the slaughterhouse or even the farm! It just seems like they’re missing the boat on saving animal lives by jumping in so far down the manufacturing chain. Eh, just an opinion.

Anyway, this thought popped into my head as I saw this guy walking down 5th avenue last week. From a distance I thought this guy was walking with a lumpy sweatshirt or scarf on his shoulders. But it was too warm for either of those things, so I took a double take. What do you think it is from behind?

And the big reveal – it’s a cat! Yes, that’s right. It was moving and meowing and all. A live cat just hanging out while this guy was walking briskly down 5th ave. So, PETA, is this a violation? I mean, the kitty was definitely still alive. Btw, what is wrong with people??

Bozeman, Montana - I recently went on a holiday to Yellowstone National Park (it’s totally awesome, btw). Anyway, I landed in Bozeman and rented a car to drive to Wyoming. Most of us have rented cars at one point or another and go thru a pretty standard procedure – credit card, license, initial on twenty lines that are impossible to read but double your price of your rental, and then you’re done. Well, not in Montana. In Montana, you do all that and then they give you the paperwork, a little map, and a warning not to get killed by a Buffalo. What??!! Yes, the gentleman behind the counter explained, “Yes, ma’am, we just have way too many customers that get out of the car and get attacked by the bison. I ran out of our warning sheets, but you can read the sign on our board…”

New York, NY - I’m a sucker for dogs – really, I am. In fact, from about 50 feet away, I was admiring the cute little black dog that was being walked with the ‘baby’. As I got closer, I was like, dang, I know this is mean, but that baby is kind of uncute. And then I saw it: the baby was another dog! Are you kidding me? There are more dogs than people in NY (I’m making that stat up, but there are a lot of dogs). In fact, there is a thriving dog industry in New York with dog parks, dog cafes, dog sitters, dog hotels, dog, dog, dog, and it’s all just great, but this was a doggy first.

I needed to know the reason why this pooch was being pushed, so I asked the nice lady if the dog was injured or something and she said, “Nope, he just likes the stroller.” Only in New York would someone push their dog around in a stroller because they like it!! I think she was taking him to the pool next to chill out on a lounge chair and have a margarita.

New York, NY - I was watching this bum for a while when I noticed that his sign had suddenly changed. Of course, I needed to know, so I asked and found out that he waits to see how much change he gets with a particular sign. If it’s not working for him, he moves on to the next one. I never realized that bums engage in market testing. Anyway, I’m not sure either of those signs will help his cause…

New York, New York – The great thing about New York is that you can dress however you want, act however you want, speak in whatever manner you want and people usually don’t give you a second thought. In short, there are so many freaks in this city that you really, really have to do something extraordinary to catch a native’s attention. Well today, something caught my attention.

I woke up and walked to St. Mark’s place to grab a cup of coffee. Along the way, I avoided a urinating homeless man, passed a tranny in a ripped prom dress, and eyed a pair of handcuffs affixed to a tree…no big deal. And then I saw this:

Your eyes tell no lies – it’s a pole dancer being escorted around by a middle-aged biker. The music was blaring and her booty was pumping – she was in full effect pre 8am. I ran to get my coffee and came back to make sure I hadn’t imagined the sight. Nope, they were still there and in great spirits. I pulled out my camera and they waved hello. The best part? They were not advertising poll dancing class, nor were they asking for money. They were simply being themselves doing something that would happen only in New York.

Paper or Plastic?

Singapore – I was having a hard time capturing this pic as the gentleman was a bit camera shy – thank god for the discreet iphone cam. Here we have a Singaporean phenomena: Coffee served in a plastic bag. It is actually called hot Kofi (which, incidentally, is delicious) served in a plastic bag complete with a plastic handle and miniature plastic straw.

Some may not give this a second look, however, as an avid coffee drinker, I found the whole thing very curious. First, how the heck do you add cream and sugar? I tried it and trust me, I almost had a McDonald’s second degree burn situation going on. How does this bag travel? I definitely wouldn’t be putting it between my legs whilst driving to work. Is it heat resistant? If you’re a slow drinker like myself, will it eventually just melt into oblivion? Does it self destruct after a few minutes? So many questions…

OH! By the way, if you’re in the area, you will only receive the baggy version upon special request..they save the plastic for the locals with teflon coated hands.

Bangkok, Thailand – enough said. I scoured through a guide book to find what was described as a pure ‘gem’. A budget hotel that feels like a 5 star with stellar service, breakfast, and an elevator (great).

After several hours (ok, like 20 minutes) of being lost, I arrived at THE ATLANTA to only spend another twenty minutes analyzing the signage.

First and most obvious sign struck me, “No Sex Tourists Welcome”. Yes, of course. That’s obvious, right. Um, wait. What?

Then, the second and more difficult to read sign, “This is the place you are looking for – if you know it. If you don’t, you’ll never find it.”

I turned around. I decided I was too dumb to stay at The Atlanta.

P.S. 3 days in Bangkok made the no sex tourists message very clear…
